Reporting on: Animals

Doing a school report about an animal is easy if you use these excellent resources:

Research Databases

Online Virtual Library

Imagine having nearly 400 encyclopedias, directories, almanacs and dictionaries at your fingertips! Now you do.

Research Center 4 Kids
This page lists important online library resources for the junior researcher.

  1. OUR FAVORITE RESOURCE: Kids Search-Ebsco is an excellent research tool to study an animal. Under "Search by topic" click on "Animals." In the search box enter your topic.

Books

Finding a book about an animal should start at the library catalog.

SOME TIPS:

  1. Use the subject keyword search box and enter the name of the animal.
  2. Searching for “whales” may produce more results than searching for the “blue whale.” If you can’t find books on the animal, you may have to rely on reference sources such as:
  • Wildlife and Plants of the World, R J578 Wil
Alphabetically arranged illustrated articles introduce over 350 plants, animals and habitats.
  • Animal Anatomy on File, R 591.4 Ani

  • MacMillan Illustrated Animal Encyclopedia, R 591.03 Mac
  • New Jersey Wildlife Illustrated, R NJ 591.07 New
This book tracks New Jersey's wildlife heritage and highlights important animals.
  • A Field Guide to the Pine Barrens of New Jersey, NJ 574.5264 Boy
This guide describes the plants, animals, habitats and history of the Pinelands.
